Alchemy’s etymology describes it as “that which is poured out”, and according to etymonline, it’s”Involved both occult and natural philosophy and practical chemistry and metallurgy”. By this description, alchemy as it was practiced seems to fall very well under the description of chemistry: the scientific study of the composition of material things and the changes they undergo. The difference being that alchemy has parts which are occult and parts which are philosophical, as well as being the “older word” for the same subject of study.
